AI Overviews

AI Overviews are Google's AI-generated answer snippets that appear at the top of search results, synthesized by Gemini from web sources and shown above the traditional ranked links.

Definition

AI Overviews launched globally in 2024 as Google's response to ChatGPT-style search. The feature uses Gemini to synthesize an answer to the user's query directly above the standard search-result links, citing 3-5 source domains inline.

AI Overviews fundamentally change traditional SEO economics. Click-through rates from AI Overview citations are lower than from #1 ranked links, but appearing in the citation list still drives meaningful brand visibility — and being absent from a high-volume Overview means losing share even when the brand still ranks well in the link results below.

Optimizing for AI Overviews overlaps significantly with broader GEO optimization. Schema markup, declarative content, and authority-source citations all help — but Google specifically also rewards content that directly answers the query in clear declarative prose at the top of the article.

Why it matters

AI Overviews are the highest-volume AI search surface in 2026. For brands targeting transactional or definitional queries, presence in the AI Overview citation list is the new ranking #1 — and absence is the new ranking #11.

Example

A user searches 'what is generative engine optimization.' Google returns an AI Overview that synthesizes the answer in 3-4 sentences, citing the four domains it found most authoritative on the topic. The cited four get visibility; the rest of the ranked link list gets fewer clicks.
